Joseph Adam Musical App Case Study

The story of how I designed a music streaming platform. This is a mobile application tailored for independent musician Josep Adams, aimed at enhancing the connection between him and his fan base. The application will provide a platform for fans to purchase and stream music, buy merchandise, engage in discussions on a dedicated forum, and access exclusive content through a connected web service.

The Challenge

Josep Adams is facing a decline in physical music sales, necessitating a shift towards a digital approach to maintain and grow his fan-base. The challenge is to design and develop a mobile application that not only enables easy music streaming and merchandise purchase but also fosters a sense of community among his fans.

The Goal

The primary goal is to create a seamless and engaging mobile application that allows fans to:

  1. Stream and purchase Josep Adams’ music.
  2. Buy merchandise directly through the app.
  3. Interact with fellow fans on a dedicated forum.
  4. Access exclusive content through a connected web service. ultimately strengthening Josep Adams’ relationship with his audience.

User Research

During the ideation phase of the project, I conducted a combination of interviews and surveys with Josep Adams’ fan-base to understand their preferences, pain points, behaviors, and expectations regarding music consumption, fan interactions, and digital platforms, to build new personas and to inform the design.

Empathy Map

Based on the interview with the users, I came up with an empathy map that describes how the user feels, what they say, what they do and how they think.

User Persona

We wanted to form a deeper understanding of our users’ goals, needs, experiences, and behaviors. So, we created a persona to represent our user segment, which was based on user interviews and surveys, and we kept updating it throughout the project as we gathered more data.

Competitive Analysis

  1. Spotify:

    • Strengths: Extensive music library, personalized playlists.

    • Weaknesses: Limited artist-fan interaction, less emphasis on exclusive content.

  2. Bandcamp:

    • Strengths: Direct artist support, focus on merchandise.

    • Weaknesses: Limited community features.

  3. Discord:

    • Strengths: Robust community forums, real-time interaction.

    • Weaknesses: Lacks integrated music streaming and merchandise features.

User Flow

In order to have an understanding of how seamless and short it is for a user to quickly complete a task on the JosephAdam musical application, a user flow was drawn out showing the actions a user must take to achieve an end goal.

Site Map

I created a hierarchical diagram of how the application would look, which shows how pages are prioritized, linked, and labeled.

Usability Testing

I created a fully-functional, high-fidelity prototype of the new flows using figma. At the same time, we started recruiting subjects for the test who fit our criteria. We did 4 usability tests in the first round and 3 after iterating on the issues that we’ve identified:

UI Design

Once the usability issues were resolved, I moved on to design the final screens in Figma. My goal was to create a visual identity that’s aligned with the brand’s values and message. Also, I’ve checked the competition and took a deep dive into my catalog of references for inspiration.

Interface Screens

Take a closer look at some of the key screens from the Joseph Adam Musical App. The proposed mobile application and connected web service aim to not only address the current challenges faced by Josep Adams but also elevate the overall fan experience, creating a vibrant and engaged community around his music.
